One of the features that really sold us on our apartment was the balcony. Tiny, even by Paris standards, but an actual balcony, not just a wrought iron railing on a narrow eyebrow that from the street below appears to be a balcony. When we arrived in early March, we were surprised to find the little balcony was being used for storage, like a basement, crammed with old drying racks, extras parts from long ago projects, a broken chair, even a ladder, all covered with decades of city grime and dust.. This would never do! So our project for the weekend was to liberate the balcony. Fortified with strong French coffee, and armed with mops, buckets, a vacuum, Windex, and elbow grease, it wasn't long before victory was declared. A quick trip to our local flower shop for the perfect potted plants for the window box, and voila! We spent the rest of Saturday afternoon sunning on our little balcony, sipping coffee, and people watching.
Sunday dawned cold and cloudy, and we were back in our winter coats. And yes, we will need to bring the flowers in overnight tonight, as the thermometer is expected to dip close to freezing. But it was worth the effort, and we will use our little extra room for the balance of our stay, even if we have to wrap ourselves in blankets!
