We're off! I-40 West. We made our first stop about a hundred miles down The Road at Pisgah National Forest to purchase a National Park Pass. For Seniors. Yes, "a Senior pass" Ron repeats indignantly. The Ranger graciously smiled for a picture.
Back on I-40, up and over the Blue Ridge Mountains and into Tennessee and the Central Time Zone. We crossed the Eastern Continental Divide and began our gradual decent toward the Mississippi River.
The landscape is quite beautiful. The countryside is dotted with tiny rural communities, rolling hills, farmhouses, endless fields, and the occasional horse farm. The interstate itself is bordered with miles of exposed ancient rocks, seemingly older than time itself. It is as if the rocks have been waiting throughout the millennia for Ron and I to drive by and pay notice. Today is that day....
We stopped in Lebanon Tennessee for the night, about 30 miles east of Nashville. We have family in nearby Watertown. While waiting for a dinner of take out pizza, the children and I engaged in feats of strength, cannonball splash contests,
Mermaid tea parties, and even a game of Marco Polo. I am not sure which of us enjoyed the gathering more.
[Editors Note: After much discussion and negotiation, it has been decided that Ron will have the option to include a feature he has named "Car Talk" to share technical facts about our trip for those who might be interested. ]
